Austria’s former figurehead in athletics, Karoline Käfer, has died at the age of 68. This was announced by the Klagenfurt Athletics Club on Saturday. The Carinthian celebrated her greatest success by winning the silver medal over 400 m at the 1980 Indoor European Championships in Sindelfingen. She had previously won bronze at the title fights in Milan in 1978 and in Vienna in 1979 with third place. At the outdoor European Championships, sixth place was the best result in 1974 in Rome.
