The former US President could face another trial. According to his own statements, he was informed by the judiciary.

Former US President Donald Trump says he is the “target” of investigations into the January 2021 storming of the Capitol – and could be charged. Trump said Tuesday on his online platform Truth Social that he had received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith.

“The deranged Jack Smith, Joe Biden’s Attorney at Justice, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I was a target of the Jan. 6 grand jury investigation, and gave me a very brief one I was given four days to report myself to the Justice Department, which almost always means an arrest and indictment,” US news channel CNN quoted the former US president’s post as saying.

Committee recommended criminal proceedings

Smith had already obtained charges against Trump in the secret documents affair in June. The special counsel employed by the Justice Department is conducting two investigations in parallel: one on secret documents that Trump took from the White House to his private estate Mar-a-Lago in the state of Florida at the end of his term in early 2021, and one on possible criminal responsibility of the former US -Presidents for the January 6, 2021 violence.

Radical supporters of Trump had stormed the Capitol when Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election was to be certified there. Trump had previously called on his supporters to march to the Capitol and fight “whatever the hell”. In the weeks before, the incumbent who had been voted out had claimed that he had been the victim of massive voter fraud – a claim that has been refuted many times.

Last December, the House investigative committee into the storming of the Capitol recommended that the judiciary initiate criminal proceedings against the former president for, among other things, instigating or aiding and abetting a riot.
