Former Vice President Germán Vargas Lleras Supports National Constituent Assembly: Analysis and Insights

The former vice president of the Republic Germán Vargas Lleras delved even further into the controversy that he himself generated by announcing that he supports the national constituent assembly proposed by the president, Gustavo Petro, and even revealed that he is willing to participate in the mechanism.

“If the constituent assembly is called, I do intend to be part of it. I would have a lot to contribute and above all a lot to question. I hope this political controversy can be brought forward,” said the former official.

“I heard the President of the Republic today on Friday and it caused me, to say the least, an impression that he was once again threatening Congress if they do not approve his disastrous reforms. The one that sinks the health of all Colombians; the pension, which does nothing different than take away private savings and return them to the State’s coffers, and the labor, which arrives at the most inopportune moment,” said Vargas Lleras.

And he pointed out: “So, instead of him continuing to threaten us, let’s help him push forward the call for a constituent assembly and make it within the framework of that constituent assembly where these debates take place.”

The former vice president emphasized in his statements: “I am absolutely sure that the vast majority of Colombians share the idea that this country is not going in the right direction, that they find in their region that public order has deteriorated enormously, that they also warn that the economy is prostrate, housing is, infrastructure is, it is already beginning to be noticed in the health sector, in oil, in gas. This is not going in the right direction and if it is necessary for this proposal from the president to come to fruition, it is welcome, let us not be afraid of it.”

Faced with the question that the same thing that happened to Gabriel Boric in Chile could happen to President Petro, Vargas Lleras indicated: “I think so, I hope he is not going to be scared. If he already called it, we are going to help him move it forward and it will be the Colombians who defend the orientation and direction of this nation.”

And he added bluntly: “Let’s not expect from this terrible dropper, where every day we are subject to a worse advertisement.”

Now, faced with the questions that Germán Vargas Lleras himself has received for supporting President Petro’s constituent proposal, despite the uncertainty that this could generate, the former vice president was clear in stating: “And uncertainty is not what We are living, uncertainty is not what the builders live, uncertainty is not the people who work in health, uncertainty is not the ranchers and farmers burdened by kidnappings, cattle rustling and extortion. More uncertainty for where.”

“The risk rating agencies have already said it, this is a country full of uncertainties. Here they decided to modify the contracts unilaterally and that is why what happened in the infrastructure sector happened; They decided to change the public housing model and we have the housing sector in complete prostration; and Petro has already said that with the approval of the reforms or without the approval of the reforms, he will implement them in any case. Yes, here we are already beginning to walk on very dangerous ground and that is respect for the independence of powers and the rule of law itself,” Vargas Lleras stressed.

The former vice president had already confessed in the last few hours that he supports the constituent assembly proposed by Petro and had requested that it be convened to “defeat” him.

“Let’s support Petro’s constituent, but no more blackmail, no more threats, let’s call and defeat him in his constituent,” he wrote verbatim on his social networks.

Vargas Lleras stated: “Today, millions of Colombians, immersed in uncertainty, ask themselves: what can they do? And I answer them, let’s organize.”

“Just because there is no constituent does not mean that Gustavo Petro’s government is not thinking about appealing to any mechanism to promote re-election in Colombia. What we are clear about is that he cares less and less about institutions and the rule of law,” concluded Vargas Lleras.
