Red Bulls team boss Christian Horner has spoken out in favor of increasing the budget limit in Formula 1. Otherwise it could happen that certain teams do not compete in some races.
The reason given by the 48-year-old was high inflation and rising energy costs in the teams’ racing factories. “Seven teams will probably have to skip the last four races to stay on budget,” said Horner.
The ten Formula 1 racing teams are currently obliged to spend a maximum of 130 million euros per season. This includes development costs, repairs and all logistics. Above all, the price development for transport has skyrocketed and has quadrupled since the start of the season. Only the salaries of the drivers and team members are not included.
The FIA must now examine to what extent an increase in the budget cap is possible, according to Horner. According to media reports, however, several racing teams are opposed to these efforts: Alfa Romeo, Alpine, Haas and Williams voted against a proposal to adjust the spending limit to the inflation rate.
In addition to World Championship leader Red Bull, the financially strong top teams Ferrari and Mercedes as well as McLaren are also said to be pushing for an increase in the budget limit.
The limit was included in the rules last year to ensure more equal opportunities.
