His chances were still mathematical, they are no longer: winner of three E-Prix this season, the Genevan Edoardo Mortara (Venturi) lost his last hopes of coming back on the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes) during the first of the two disputed races around and in the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, South Korea.
Sixth on the grid for a start given in the rain, Mortara avoided the big crowding of the first lap, the race having to be stopped with the red flag after the exits from the road of the Frenchman Norman Nato, of the Aiglon Sébastien Buemi (Nissan) and Dutchman Nyck De Vries, who got stuck under Buemi’s car and was stuck in his cockpit for many minutes before being released without the slightest injury.
Seven cars eliminated from the start, a second start was going to be given on a still wet track, the race being dominated by the New Zealander Mitch Evans (Jaguar). Mortara, first penalized by 5 seconds for having changed course too often while trying to resist the attacks of Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne, was finally forced to retire after a puncture in the front right; the Genevan maintains his third place in the world before the final – the 100th race in the history of Formula E – on Sunday morning.
With 21 points ahead of Evans (there are 28 in play), the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne is ideally placed before this final race of generation 2 of Formula E, a category which will welcome shorter cars from next year. , lighter and more powerful.
