Fortuna Düsseldorf clearly won against Holstein Kiel in the 2nd Bundesliga on Saturday (May 6th, 2023) and is now only four points behind third-placed Hamburger SV. In Düsseldorf they can dream of promotion – but they would have to win their games themselves and hope that HSV would slip up.

Düsseldorf also had ten really strong minutes to thank for the 3-0 (3-0) success. Shinta Appelkamp (14th minute), André Hoffmann (19th) and Daniel Ginczek (24th) scored three times in just ten minutes – and thus ensured the early preliminary decision this afternoon.

“It was a cool phase. I think the spectators really enjoyed it and they rewarded it accordingly,” said Düsseldorf coach Daniel Thioune. “The fact that three goals were scored in this phase was of course very beneficial for the game,” he added.

Only four points behind Hamburg

After the 16th win of the season, Fortuna has 53 points and is only four points behind HSV in third place. In view of the relative weakness of Hamburger SV (only one win from the last four games), they can dream of two bonus games in the relegation in Düsseldorf and of course promotion.

The Fortnua coach Thioune did not want to answer specifically whether he believed in promotion after the clear 3-0 victory: “At the moment I believe in my team that they are able to collect as much as possible until the end of the season. Then we’ll see we continue.”

Kiel still has 40 points and is in tenth place in the no man’s land of the table. Holstein can no longer be relegated, and it is no longer an option either. You might notice that in the people of Kiel.

Kiel’s Holtby shoots over the goal from six yards

In Dusseldorf, Holstein Kiel sometimes played quite well and still conceded the third defeat in a row. When Fortuna scored, Kiel’s defense didn’t look good, and the offensive again remained without goals, it was the third game in a row without a sense of achievement.

“We invited the opponent to score goals. We have to take credit for that,” said Kiels trainer Marcel Rapp. “Then it’s 3-0 against Düsseldorf and it will be very difficult to take something from here,” said Rapp. Rapp does not want to talk about a drop in tension in his team. “It is now up to us, the boys, to show that this is not the case. And we have to start with that in Karlsruhe,” demanded Rapp.

Once, in the 44th minute, they came very close to a goal. But first Timo Becker hit the post, then Lewis Holtby shot the rebound over six meters with his right foot and not into the goal.

Ten minutes that decided the game

The lead for Düsseldorf fell after a cross from Emmanuel Iyoha, which Ginczek extended with the back of his head. Appelkamp benefited from this, he was relatively free and headed in.

Just five minutes later, Fortuna scored again, again with a header: Hoffmann ran in at the right moment after a corner from Appelkamp and headed into the left corner.

Shortly thereafter, Fortuna Düsseldorf received a penalty after Kiel’s fin Bartels Iyoha brought down. Ginczek went on and converted safely, it was his second goal of the season.

Düsseldorf as a guest at the Millerntor

Next weekend, Düsseldorf is required to play away at FC St. Pauli (Saturday, May 13th, 2023 at 8:30 p.m.). Kiel receives Karlsruher SC seven and a half hours beforehand.
