Fossils may not be in the COP28 final document

It remains questionable at the UN climate conference in Dubai whether there will be a commitment to abandoning the use of fossil fuels. A new draft text for the planned final document distributed on Tuesday initially only lists various options. One of them is not to mention the topic at all.

The most far-reaching variant calls for an “orderly and fair exit from fossil fuels”. A third variant calls for “accelerating efforts to phase out fossil fuels unless there are facilities for capturing emissions and rapidly reducing their use in order to achieve carbon neutrality in the energy system by or around mid-century to reach”.

The future use of fossil energies is one of the main points of contention at the World Climate Conference (COP28). Oil and gas exporting countries in particular are resisting the calls for an exit, but so are a number of other countries that still use fossil energy on a large scale. Conversely, numerous other states, including the EU countries, are pushing for the exit perspective to be enshrined in the final document of the climate conference.
