American scientists have discovered a drug that is effective against both COVID-19 and cancer. Experts from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) released their findings.

The researchers found that as a viral infection progresses, infected cells produce higher levels of the GRP78 protein. Using a special tool, the scientists suppressed the production of GRP78 in human lung cells in the laboratory without interrupting other cellular processes. The cells were then infected with SARS-CoV-2.
It turned out that the virus began to produce less of the spike protein needed to enter the cells. This suggests that GRP78 is required for pathogen replication and production.
They then used the recently developed anti-cancer drug HA15, which inhibits the activity of GRP78. The substance has shown high efficacy against coronavirus. It is important that at the same time it did not have a detrimental effect on healthy cells. Experiments were carried out on mice, which showed a positive result.
Previously, Americans took up arms against red meat. According to a study by Dr. Marios Giannakis of the American Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, red meat eaters are at risk of cancer.
