January 27, news agency Sputnik says a team of astronomers in Japan has found a galaxy nearly 13.5 billion light-years from Earth and confirmed it as the oldest galaxy found to date.
The team of astronomers first discovered this galaxy using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Using the ALMA (Millimeter and Shorter Spectrum Large Measurement System) telescope, they were able to date the new galaxy 367 million years old before the Big Bang.
The previous record for the oldest galaxy found was GN-z11, which formed about 400 million years after the Big Bang.

The team of astronomers first discovered the new galaxy, named GHZ2/GLASS-z12, in July 2022. The results were published in a scientific paper in November 2022, but the team of astronomers wanted to confirm more closely the true age of this galaxy, so they used the ALMA telescope.
“We performed detailed tests of what we observed to confirm with certainty that this is indeed a groundbreaking find,” said Tom Bakx, an astronomer at Nagoya University in Japan. and is one of the leaders of the research team, said.
