Four dead in motor glider crash in Lungau

According to the online edition of the Kronen Zeitung, four people died when a motor glider crashed in Salzburg’s Lungau on Thursday followingnoon, as it reported late on Thursday evening. Initial information from the Red Cross on Thursday followingnoon reported two seriously injured people. The accident occurred in the Lintsching district of Sankt Andrä, in the middle of the forest in steep, impassable terrain.

As the Kronen Zeitung report goes on to say, the small plane is said to have taken off from Croatia and ran into unknown problems shortly following 3 p.m., which led to the crash. According to an eyewitness who heard a bang and alerted the rescue services, it was a motor glider.

Continuous rain and the steep terrain made the rescue difficult, which continued even at midnight. Details regarding the aircraft and its occupants are currently unknown. An emergency doctor helicopter, an emergency doctor and three rescue vehicles from the Red Cross, fire brigade, mountain rescue and police were in action.

The Salzburg State Criminal Police Office and aviation experts are now examining the wreckage to determine the cause of the crash, as the Kronen Zeitung reports.
