As Apple prepares for its upcoming hardware cycle, manufacturing partner Foxconn has launched an urgent hiring surge across major production hubs in mainland China, including Zhengzhou, Shenzhen, and Nanning, to secure assembly lines for the upcoming iPhone 18 series and Apple’s anticipated first foldable smartphone.
Engineering the Supply Chain for the iPhone 18
Mass-producing next-generation silicon and complex device architectures requires massive operational bandwidth on the factory floor.
The operational scale varies by facility, reflecting regional specialization. In Nanning, local human resources data shows an active recruitment wave for 309 technical roles, spanning mechanical engineers, equipment maintenance specialists, and general production staff. Maintenance engineers at the Nanning facility can command monthly salaries up to 12,000 yuan, roughly translating to (about 247만원), highlighting the specialized technical skill set required to keep high-speed surface-mount technology lines operational.
Incentives, Bonuses, and Market Comparisons
At the massive Zhengzhou campus—traditionally the primary heartbeat for flagship iPhone assembly—recruitment incentives have been ramped up significantly to draw experienced labor back to the line. Returning workers with at least three months of prior tenure at the plant are being offered a return bonus of 7,800 yuan, roughly (about 160만원). Meanwhile, temporary hourly wages have hit 28 yuan, about (about 5,800원) per hour.
These figures represent notable upward adjustments from previous weeks, climbing by roughly 1,800 yuan for the return bonus and 2 additional yuan per hour within a single month. Additional localized incentives target early arrivals. MacObserver reported that staff who report for work immediately following August 14 receive an extra 500 yuan bonus on top of standard compensation packages.
A closer look at historical compensation reveals nuanced market adjustments. Red Star Capital Bureau notes that during the mass production run for the iPhone 17 in August of the previous year, Zhengzhou’s return bonuses peaked between 8,000 and 9,800 yuan.
Apple’s Market Position in Greater China
This aggressive manufacturing ramp-up aligns with shifting sales trajectories in the region. Data compiled by IDC for the second quarter of 2026 indicates that overall smartphone shipments in China contracted by 4.3% year-over-year. Despite this broader market cooling, Apple experienced a robust 24.4% surge in shipments within the region.
Capturing an 18.1% market share, Apple currently holds the second position in China’s competitive smartphone landscape, trailing Huawei at 22.6%. With the iPhone 18 series and the brand’s maiden foldable device entering mass production lines across Zhengzhou, Shenzhen, and Nanning, Foxconn’s factory mobilization aims to sustain this hardware momentum through the back half of the year.
