The French delegation’s performance at the 2026 European Athletics Championships ended with 11 medals—three silver and eight bronze—placing them 19th in the overall standings. This result, while better than some previous editions, fell short of expectations, particularly after the team’s 2024 Rome success, where they claimed 16 medals. We’re not in a sunny light, nor an eclipse, said Frank Bignet, the French Athletics Federation’s technical director, reflecting on the “half-full” outcome.
The 2026 championships concluded on August 16, with Italy securing 22 medals (10 gold, six silver, six bronze), followed by Britain (19 medals, nine gold) and Germany (21 medals, six gold). France’s 11-medal total—0 gold, 3 silver, 8 bronze—marked the fourth instance since 1934 of the nation finishing without a title, joining 1958, 1982, and 2022. This isn’t a sunny light, nor an eclipse, Bignet said, noting the team’s 55% top-eight finish but emphasizing the crippling absence of a title.
Une équipe de France performante mais sans athlète dominant
A mixed bag of performances defined the French campaign. Alice Finot’s silver in the 3,000m steeplechase, described as a taste of gold by analysts, highlighted individual resilience. However, the team’s struggles were evident in the absence of world-class contenders. We have athletes who reach finals but lack the firepower to secure top spots, said Stéphane Diagana, a France Télévisions consultant. This was epitomized by Jimmy Gressier, who aimed for a double in the 5,000m and 10,000m but failed to medal.
The French team also grappled with injuries and setbacks. Alexis Miellet, a steepleur, failed to advance beyond the heats, and Gabriel Tual exited in the semis due to a “kick” deficiency. The context of Paris 2024 played a role, Diagana observed, citing the “decompression” effect of the 2025 season on athletes like Finot, who returned from a difficult 2025 campaign.
Athlétisme. Le tableau des médailles finales des Championnats d’Europe
The 2026 championships also saw Italy dominate with 10 golds, led by Nadia Battocletti’s 5,000m and 10,000m wins, and British sprinter Amy Hunt securing four titles in the 4x100m mixte event. France’s 19th-place finish underscored the depth of European competition, with the Netherlands (14 medals), Norway (6), and Switzerland (7) rounding out the top 10. The international context was monstrous, Bignet said, citing Hungary’s Bence Halasz, who set a world-leading 84.25m in the hammer throw.
The team will conduct a post-event debrief to address gaps in performance, particularly in events where France lacks world-class contenders. We have athletes who know how to reach finals, but not the ones who can dominate, Diagana said. That’s the challenge for the next cycle.
The 2026 edition also introduced the 4x100m mixte relay, a format that allowed Hunt to achieve a “grand chelem” of four golds. For now, the team’s 11-medal haul—while better than some previous editions—remains a cautionary tale of potential unmet in the face of fierce European competition.
