PARIS: France has banned domestic short-haul flights with train alternatives as part of a bid to cut carbon emissions. Air services to places that can be reached by train within two and a half hours have been terminated. The new law will affect air travel between cities such as Paris Nantes, Lyon and Bordeaux. Meanwhile, connecting flights will not be affected by the ban.

Laurent Donziel, interim head of industry group Airlines for Europe (A4E), told the news agency that the new ban would not help much in reducing carbon emissions and that the government must find real solutions. The Corona Pandemic period has severely affected airlines worldwide. The figures also show that the number of flights last year decreased by around 42% compared to 2019.

France’s Citizens’ Convention has proposed that air travel be avoided where train journeys of less than four hours are possible. Citizens Convention was created by Emmanuel Macron in 2019. But following some objections, the four hours was reduced to two and a half hours.
