In France, a police officer shot and killed a 17-year-old during a police check. A witness filmed the officer shooting at the boy.
Munich/Nanterre – People in France are shocked: in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, a 17-year-old driver was shot dead by a police officer during a traffic check. A motorcycle patrol stopped the car, in which three people were sitting, on Tuesday morning (June 27). A video shows an officer pointing his gun at the driver and pulling the trigger. Serious riots then broke out in Nanterre and other surrounding suburbs.

The video was posted on Twitter by a witness on June 27 and was broadcast by the French broadcaster France Info verified. You can see a yellow car and two police officers standing on the driver’s side. One of them is leaning against the driver’s window, the other has a gun pointed at the driver. As the car pulls away, a shot can be heard, which the police officer fires at the driver. The car then drives on.
In another sequence of the video you can see the yellow car again. It went off the road a few meters further and drove into a roadblock, as the video shows and also France Info reported. The shot at close range hit the 17-year-old in the chest, killing him. A minor passenger was arrested and later released. The third passenger fled, according to prosecutors.

Police officer shoots boy in France: investigations against officials initiated
Initially, the officials had stated that the youth wanted to run over them. In a second version, they then moved away from the explanation and described that the 17-year-old simply did not follow their instructions and suddenly stepped on the gas. On Wednesday (June 27), Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said the officer who fired the shot was taken into police custody. He is being investigated on suspicion of manslaughter.
The killed teenager is said to have been known to the police for previous traffic offenses and resisting law enforcement officers. The boy’s family, through their lawyer, announced that they would sue the shooter for murder and also for false testimony because his account of events was clearly contradicted by the video footage.

People demonstrated in front of the police station in Nanterre on Tuesday evening. The protests also spread to other places on Wednesday night. Garbage cans, cars, an elementary school and the extension of a town hall were set on fire by the outraged people. Rescuers were shot at with exploding fireworks. According to Interior Minister Darmanin, 31 people were arrested and 24 of the 1,200 police officers deployed were injured.
