France Raises Avian Influenza Risk Level: What You Need to Know

2023-11-28 21:40:00

Faced with the increase in cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in wildlife and a first outbreak detected in a turkey farm in Morbihan, France is raising its risk level.

The decree published on November 28 in the Official Journal raises the risk level from “negligible” to “moderate” across the entire metropolitan area.

The level of risk with regard to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was described as “negligible” across the entire metropolitan territory since July 7, 2023 and France had also regained its “HPAI-free” status in last August in accordance with the provisions of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA). Vigilance and compliance with prevention rules as well as general biosecurity measures, however, remained imperative for professionals in the poultry sector.

However, a first case of avian flu detected in Morbihan on a turkey farm after several cases noted in wildlife, forced the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty to move from the negligible risk level to the moderate risk level on throughout the metropolitan area, this Tuesday, November 28.

A warning that the professional community takes seriously, without dramatizing. The prophylactic measures put in place, in particular vaccination which is taking place according to the plan planned in the Gers and Landes, are reassuring elements.
