France’s Debate on the Place of the Abaya in Schools: Defending Identity and Secularism

For several months now, France has been debating the place of the abaya in schools.

The abaya is this traditional garment from the Arab world. By itself, the abaya does not necessarily have a religious meaning, but it does take on one in the French context. It is put forward by Islamists to allow young Muslim women to circumvent the law on secularism. The latter, as we know, prohibits religious signs among students at school, in particular the veil. The abaya practically becomes a substitute for the veil.

In recent months, abayas have multiplied. In other words, the French school was the target of an Islamist offensive.

And France defended itself.

This decision transcends the usual political divisions. A poll published on Tuesday tells us that 82% of French people support this decision.

Gabriel Attal, the Minister of National Education who took this decision, belongs to a centrist government.

The Republican left applauds the measure: it recalls that religious symbols have no place in school.

The classic right also rejoices. The same is true of the National Rally. Both see it as a way of fighting against Islamism and reaffirming the duty to integrate populations of immigrant origin.

Only the extreme left, converted to islamo-leftism, opposes it. For her, asking Islam to adapt to Western mores is “Islamophobic”.

The proliferation of abayas in the public space is in line with Islamist ideology, which intends to mark Muslims publicly, and subject them to its most rigorous demands, otherwise they will be accused of being bad Muslims.

It is also a matter of establishing a balance of power with the host country, to force it to give in to Islam revised by Islamism, in the name of “openness to others” and “diversity”.

Certainly, some young women wear the abaya by choice. Others do it out of fear of social reprobation. The same is true for the veil.

But that is not the main thing, because the abaya, and the other ostentatious religious signs, have a function: to Islamize the public space.

This must be seen both as a gesture of identity secession and as an anti-French provocation.

Of secession, insofar as the one who wears the abaya sends the signal that she belongs first to her ethno-religious community, and only, perhaps later, to her host country.

Provocation, insofar as the Islamists want to lay down the law where they arrive. Moreover, the neighborhoods where Islamist mores are supplanting French mores are more and more numerous.

They are called the Lost Territories of the Republic.

We could also call them the territories conquered by Islamism, which relies on the existence of an increasingly numerous Muslim population, descended from immigration, to impose its rules in France.

Islamism

France, by banning the abaya, is defending both its identity and its secularism – especially since at home, the two are largely confused.

It is not for France to adapt to Islam, but for Islam to adapt to France.

She just called him back.

Simple bon sens!

Long live France!
