Pope Today Francis created a new diocese in the Chubut city of Rawson and appointed as the first bishop Monsignor Roberto Álvarez, until now assistant Commodore Rivadavia.

As reported today in a Vatican statement, the pontiff decided that Rawson will now become a diocese (ecclesiastical jurisdiction). separated from that of Comodoro Rivadavia.

After this decision, Francisco appointed Álvarez as the first bishop for the diocese which has 143,360 Catholics out of a total of 242,267 inhabitants, according to the Holy See.
