Frankfurt: What to Do in the Sunshine – Spring Activities & Tips

Frankfurt residents are poised to enjoy a brief respite from the approaching cooler weather, with sunny skies and a high of 15 degrees Celsius forecast for Sunday, March 22, 2026. The warm spell offers a chance to experience the city’s outdoor attractions before a return to cloudier conditions and rain mid-week.

The Frankfurt metropolitan region, encompassing parts of Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Bavaria, is home to over 5.9 million people and boasts a GDP of approximately €300.868 billion (2021). The city itself offers a variety of options for enjoying the spring weather.

For those seeking outdoor activity, the Grüngürtel, or “Green Belt,” provides a 13,000 square kilometer network of paths for walking, cycling, and gravel biking. Designated Germany’s best metropolitan walking path in 2014 by Wandermagazin, the route winds through meadows, fields, along rivers, vineyards, and even includes a dune.

The Deutsche Bank Park has recently opened a modern climbing forest, featuring five “Megatower” structures reaching 29 meters in height and approximately 150 climbing elements. The park caters to both experienced climbers and beginners, with varying levels of difficulty.

Traditional German cuisine and local specialties, including Handkäs mit Musik (a sour milk cheese), Grüne Soße (green sauce), and Frankfurter Rippchen (pork ribs), are available at the Lorsbacher Thal Apfelweinwirtschaft in the Alt-Sachsenhausen district. The restaurant’s garden can accommodate up to 200 guests.

Alternatively, visitors can explore the Palmengarten, a botanical garden in the Bockenheim district, showcasing a diverse collection of plants from around the world. The garden is divided into sections dedicated to different botanical themes.

For a sweet treat, the Antipodean ice cream parlor in Bornheim offers homemade gelato served in fully compostable containers and utensils. The nearby Luisenplatz provides additional seating for enjoying the ice cream.

The mild temperatures are expected to give way to cooler and wetter conditions starting Monday, March 23, with temperatures dropping to 11 degrees Celsius and rain forecast by Wednesday, March 25.
