While the rest of the Salzkammergut (or 23 Upper Austrian and Styrian communities) is celebrating the European Capital of Culture year in 2024, Lake Wolfgangsee is offering a different anniversary: 1,100 years of Saint Wolfgang are being celebrated, as the Bishop of Regensburg, who owns the lake and the town of St. Wolfgang owe his name, born in 924. One of the main attractions of the anniversary year will be a musical for which Franzobel wrote the libretto: “Wolf – The Mystical”.
The author places the bishop, who was canonized in 1052 and is surrounded by numerous legends, at the center of the action. His alleged miracles, his temporary retreat into hermit life, his encounters with the devil and, last but not least, his legendary ax throwing from the heights of the Falkenstein to the current church location, miles away, offer all sorts of clues for the “mystical” to which the South Tyrolean composer Gerd Hermann Ortler who wrote the music. The premiere is planned for May 23, 2024.
For the performances, Lake Wolfgangsee will have a lakeside stage, which was planned by the Viennese architect Eduard Neversal. It will be built in front of the holiday center in Ried near St. Wolfgang and will offer around 800 places. The audience will be brought to the performance venue by ship – as will the press representatives, to whom the project will be presented in detail on November 20th.
St. Wolfgang was already a well-known place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages with up to 80,000 pilgrims annually. The “Wolfgangwege” lead from far away to Lake Wolfgang. The “Wolfgang Year” is also celebrated in many other of the approximately 150 “Wolfgang places” in Central Europe. In the three Wolfgangsee communities of St. Wolfgang, Strobl and St. Gilgen there will be a festival at the end of April that will focus on customs and folk culture. From April 28th, the art festival “Art Circle International” will also attract artists to Lake Wolfgangsee.
