free thick blood test and rapid screening test in public hospitals – AIP – Agence Ivoirienne de Presse de Côte d’Ivoire

Abidjan, 20 Apr 2022 (AIP)- The thick film and the rapid screening test (RDT) to detect malaria parasites are free in public hospitals, reaffirmed the director-coordinator of the National Malaria Control Program (PNLP ), Dr Tanoh Méa Antoine, Tuesday April 19, 2022, during a press conference.

These two examinations are free because they are subsidized by the State of Côte d’Ivoire and its partners. If the result is positive that it is uncomplicated malaria, the doctor or nurse should also give free ACTs, drugs that eliminate the malaria parasite in the human body.

Dr. Tanoh recalled that in the context of targeted free care, the President of the Republic, Alassane Ouattara has taken measures to ensure that pregnant women and children under five are treated free of charge in public health centers.

On the other hand, he pointed out that consultation in the treatment of malaria and medication to treat other symptoms such as fatigue, vomiting and others are also chargeable. If the malaria has become severe and requires hospitalization of the patient, this treatment is not subsidized. Therefore, this serious case is the responsibility of the patient.

The director-coordinator took the opportunity to invite people to sleep under an impregnated mosquito net in order to reduce the risk of being bitten by the Anopheles mosquito which transmits malaria. He also called on people and communities to clean up the living environment to avoid the rapid reproduction of mosquitoes by eliminating most of the breeding sites.

Dr Tanoh Méa Antoine spoke ahead of the celebration of World Malaria Day to be held on April 25, 2022 on the theme, “Harnessing innovation to reduce the global burden of malaria and save lives “.

Before the official celebration in the department of Dabou, the PNLP initiated the 6th scientific symposium on malaria with the theme, “Intensification of the fight against malaria in Côte d’Ivoire and resilience in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic” which has been held since Wednesday April 20, 2022 at the National Institute of Public Health.
