French fighter jets intercepted a plane carrying drugs
LYON (AFP) – French security and air force sources told AFP that a Rafale fighter jet intercepted a small one-man plane over a remote French countryside over the weekend, scaring the pilot of the small plane into scrambling to escape. Ten bags of suspected drugs were thrown from the air.
On the 24th, a small plane flew over the control area near the nuclear power plant and engaged in suspicious activities. The authorities dispatched French Rafale fighter jets to intercept it over the remote Ardeche region (Ardeche).
Air Force pilots “witnessed very strange and disturbing behavior in the cockpit (of the small aircraft)” as the Rafale fighter jet drew closer, an army spokesman told AFP.
“A few minutes later, he saw the door open and the package was ejected.”
The local prosecutor’s office issued a statement today saying that the Polish drug suspect, who had a previous drug record, was arrested when he landed at the airport in Lanas, Ardesh region.
Investigators found about 15 packages on the ground containing about 30 kilograms of white powder. Authorities are testing the white powder.
They also found more than 45,000 euros (approximately NT$1.53 million) in cash in the cockpit of the Polish-registered plane and in the pilot’s bag.
French authorities only seized more than 2 tonnes of cocaine on the northern beaches in March. According to the Ministry of the Interior, France seized 156.7 tons of drugs last year, the highest ever recorded.
