French nuclear production exceeds 40 GW: why is this good news?

French nuclear production exceeded 40 gigawatts (GW) this weekend as the country recorded a cold spell, data from RTE, the manager of high-voltage lines in France, showed on Sunday.

This production has been affected in recent months by the unavailability of reactors for maintenance, checks or repairs, but EDF announced on Friday the restart of three nuclear reactors that had been shut down. It stood at 40.6 GW this Sunday at 12 p.m. after rising above 40 GW on Saturday for the first time since March 11, RTE said.

The President of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), Emmanuelle Wargon, estimated on Friday on Europe 1 that France should reach a production capacity of 40 GW “next month”.
