French President Emmanuel Macron’s Stance on Peace in Ukraine: Latest Updates and International Dialogue Efforts

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that he had “not changed his telephone number” and that he could still be reached if his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had “serious proposals” to make for peace in Ukraine. “If President Putin has a desire for dialogue and serious proposals to move forward, end the conflict and build a lasting peace, that is to say respectful of international law and therefore of Ukrainian interests and sovereignty, I will take the “call,” he said during a press conference after a European summit.

France will always be in this case “a power which will help and which will not spare its efforts to obtain a result”, he continued, recalling its own efforts to try to prevent the Russian invasion in Ukraine in February 2022 then to stop it in the first months.

Vladimir Putin affirmed Thursday that he was always ready to dialogue with his French counterpart but that it was the latter who did not see the interest and had therefore ceased all exchanges. “We are ready to continue to cooperate with France. But from a certain moment, the French president ended his relations with us,” he said during his major annual press conference in Moscow. “If he has an interest (in dialogue, editor’s note), we are ready,” he added. “If the French president does not want to communicate with us, we do not judge,” he said.
