By announcing that the PS would not vote for the so-called “anti-thugs” law, Paul Magnette has visibly hit the nail on the head. The MR is fuming, the PTB and the FGTB are exulting, the government is procrastinating.
Will the thorn in the (left) side of the De Croo government turn into a ball that the majority will have to carry around until the next elections? The statements of the president of PSPaul Magnette, who announced in an interview with L’Echo that he wanted to bury the “anti-thugs” law, unsurprisingly provoked strong reactions from both sides of the political spectrum.
On the right, the president of MRGeorges-Louis Bouchez, threatened on social networks to put other agreements back on the table.
“The PS is not burying anything at all because it does not run the federal government alone. This text was the subject of an agreement. Failure to respect this agreement would result in the calling into question of other agreements.. Loyalty cannot be limited to some. Basically, seeing the PS defend the thugs in this way is totally inappropriate for a democratic party,” declared Mr. Bouchez on X.
In the ranks of the government, there is radio silence, the time for the pressure to subside and the damage to be analyzed. The Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, did not wish to reactwhile the office of the Minister of Justice, Paul Van Tigchelt, who is carrying the bill, was content for the moment to indicate that it “will look” at how the situation “will evolve within the government” .
The left celebrates a “victory”

Finally, Eco calls the French-speaking socialists – notably the mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, who defended the sanctions against the thugs – back to their responsibilities. “Ecolo finds it interesting that the PS finally realizes its error in having asked, through Philippe Close, to insert such articles in the bill. As far as we are concerned, we have already made it known in parliament, with associations and in government all the bad things we thought about this device“, declared the party interviewed by the Belga agency.
