French Women’s Gymnastics Team Secures Olympic Qualification

2023-10-02 23:15:42

Placed in the 10th subdivision and last subdivision, the French team composed of Mélanie De Jesus Dos Santos, Marine Boyer, Coline Devillard, Lorette Charpy, Morgane Osyssek and Djenna Laroui started these 52nd world championships on vault and therefore followed the Olympic order. It was at 10:30 p.m. this Monday, after waiting for the score of Coline Devillard on the ground, the last of the competitors to appear, that the Tricolores were able to let their joy burst forth! Indeed, the French women won their Olympic team qualification by finishing 7th in these qualifications. Added to this first victory: a team final (7th), an all-around final with Mélanie De Jesus Dos Santos (10th) and two apparatus finals with Coline Devillard, 8th on vault, and Lorette Charpy, 8th qualified in the bars.

The tricolor clan therefore began on vault with two very beautiful twisting yourchenkos from Marine Boyer and Morgane Osyssek. Mélanie De Jesus Dos Santos then offers a solid double twist yourchenko. Coline Devillard, bronze medalist during the last edition, concluded on this apparatus. She performs an excellent first jump then a beautiful second jump allowing her to compete in a second world final in this event. They continue on the uneven bars where Lorette Charpy, who made her big international comeback here after her last knee injury, won a first world apparatus final by grabbing 8th qualifying place. Mélanie De Jesus Dos Santos comes close to the final on this same apparatus. 12th, she is the first reservist. On the balance beam, the unstable apparatus par excellence in gymnastics, the French women fought until the end to stay on the apparatus. If imperfections are to be noted, the young women have the merit of not having fallen once on this apparatus. On the floor, Morgane Osyssek presented a magnificent exercise with pounding landings earning her 12th place on this apparatus and 3rd place as a reserve. The tricolor clan ultimately totaled 160,930 points, synonymous with 7th place, the team final (Wednesday) and above all the Olympic team ticket. The French women’s team will participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games! The United States leads the qualifiers with 171,395 points, followed by Great Britain (166,130) and China (165,663).

Declarations
Morgane Osyssek: I was happy to have made the world championships last year as a substitute because it allowed me to know where I was putting my feet. That went very well, I’m very happy with what I did. I gave everything. I didn’t give up at the bar and after. I was focused on the future of the competition so I quickly moved on. And then I was there to encourage the girls who were all in a good mood. I am very happy with my floor. This is the highest mark I have managed to obtain on this apparatus on which I wish to specialize. So it’s nice to have a rating like that. I will continue this momentum to enter the final on this apparatus in the years to come. We mainly came to seek Olympic qualification even if the final was of course in the back of our minds. We will enjoy the moment and then discuss it. We will do our best, because we know that nothing is decided and that everything is possible in the final.

Mélanie De Jesus Dos Santos: I had a good experience with this competition. The team was relaxed so we all took it well, I think. Afterwards, obviously, it was hard since we were going to seek Olympic team qualification. I am very happy with my team: we qualified for the games and the final. Afterwards, I remain a little disappointed with my performances. I missed the bars final, by a slight margin, even though I knew I could do it, but I’m still happy to make two finals. My main goal was Olympic qualification, there was no way I was going to fall for the team. So the objective is achieved, now it’s more.

Coline Devillard: I really started with the idea, given my preparation, of doing a simple twist in the 2nd jump. Even if it allowed me to be European champion this year, I didn’t think I would enter the world final with such a simple 2nd jump. I worked a lot on the first jump to get the note to come out well. It’s crazy, it’s just more. I was ready for it not to happen. My most important jump was really the first for the team, it was for this Olympic qualification. Everything else is just a bonus. I am super happy with this qualification.

Lorette Charpy: The main objective was the team’s Olympic qualification. I was really happy to make my official return to this great competition because that was the goal. Plus with this team, it was a dream. It’s my best team competition because I managed to have fun despite the pressure of the stakes. I am very happy to have passed my bars because I was able to bring a strong mark to the team. I was happy with my score but I was focused on the team and I only realized at the very end that I was entering the final after learning about our Olympic qualification and our qualification for the team final. It was a second wave of emotion. I still can’t believe it because I didn’t come here for that. I’m very happy to be here and I’ll do my best to continue helping the team on Wednesday.
