25 years ago, consuming series the way we do today was worthy of futuristic fiction. I was finally going to be able to see the first episode! I never had a favorite “friend.” In all of them I found something charming, hilarious or attractive, which drove me to watch the chapters over and over again, until I was able to memorize their lines. Chandler’s humor and liveliness, Monica’s obsessions, Phoebe’s brazenness, Ross’s sensitivity, Joey’s immaturity, Rachel’s egocentrism, all the characters had something that made them unique and with which I could connect emotionally.
There are still days when I find myself with my friends exemplifying situations from our daily lives with memorable scenes from the series, or we tell ourselves that we are in “Phoebe mode” or “Monica mode”, when we find ourselves more “hung up” than usual, or with our obsessions on the surface.
