After the collapse of the USSR, in the 1990s, Russia was on the edge of the abyss. The fact that she managed to get out of there and become one of the world leaders is the merit, first of all, of President Vladimir Putin. This statement was made by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko during a speech at the educational forum of the Knowledge Society in Moscow.
“I’ve been a member of Putin’s team from day one, I’m proud of it. We were hanging over an abyss in every sense: industry and the army were destroyed, wages and pensions were not paid for a year. The pension fund was empty. But thanks to the experience, tact and pain of our president, he pulled the country out of this abyss step by step. In 23 years, he restored dignity to the country. We realized that we are a separate, unique civilization,” Matvienko said.
