From Liberec to Prague by train in 69 minutes. This follows from a study by the Railway Administration. The results of the Feasibility Study of the Mladá Boleslav – Turnov – Liberec – state border line were presented today by the Railway Administration

“I am glad that the modernization of the train connection of our region to Prague already has a concrete form,” said Martin Půta, governor Liberec region. “Going from Liberec to the capital by train has not made any sense for passengers for some years now, because they lost three hours of time. The trains on this line are not competitive at all. That’s why we’ve been calling for change for a long time.”

At the end of May last year, the Central Commission of the Ministry of Transport approved the Feasibility Study of the Mladá Boleslav – Turnov – Liberec – state border line in the variant labeled 200PF. The modernized railway will for the most part be double-track, in addition to the reconstruction of the existing sections, there will also be the construction of new switches, the speed of the trains will increase to 200 km/h. Thanks to this, the driving time between the centers of Liberec and Prague will be reduced to 69 minutes. The railway will thus be able to compete with road transport on this route. According to the approved variant, the existing track between Turnov and Liberec will be canceled almost along the entire route. The exception will be the section Hodkovice nad Mohelkou – Rychnov u Jablonec nad Nisou, which will be maintained for freight service. From Liberec to the state border with Poland, the line will be electrified in the existing track and selected sections will be reconstructed. In addition to the above connection, the 200PF variant also includes the electrification of the tracks in the Frýdlant ridge.

“According to what we saw today, a new two-track line is proposed in the Turnov-Liberec section, after the connection of the existing line from Turnov with the new single-track construction from Loukov, along which trains could run at a speed of up to 200 kilometers, including two tunnels and four overpasses. The existing line through Sychrov and Jermanické sedlo will probably be cancelled, except for the section Hodkovice nad Mohelkou – Rychnov u Jablonec nad Nisou, which will be used for freight transport needs.” said Jan Sviták, statutory deputy governor for transport. “In the section of the railway line Liberec – Černousy – the state border, it is expected to be electrified, as well as in the sections Raspenava – Bílý Potok pod Smrkem and Frýdlant v Cechách – Nové Město pod Smrkem.”

The Railway Administration plans to start construction in 2030 at the earliest. Investment costs are currently estimated at tens of billions of crowns.
