Archyde.com quoted Belarusian news agency Belta as saying Makei, who had been Belarus’ foreign minister since 2012, died “suddenly”, without giving further details. According to records, Mayik, 64, had just traveled to Armenia’s capital Yerevan last week to attend the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a military alliance of post-Soviet states, and had originally planned to meet with Russian diplomats on Monday. Minister Lavrov did not expect news of his death to come out suddenly.

In this regard, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova said in a statement, “Our department is shocked by the report of the death of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Makei. An official condolence letter will be issued soon.”

In fact, Makei belonged to a pro-Western faction for quite a long time in the past, played an important role in improving relations between Belarus and Western countries, and once criticized the Russian government. Until 2020, when large-scale anti-government protests broke out in Belarus after the presidential election, Makei’s position suddenly changed, accusing the demonstrators in the territory of being controlled by Western agents.

After the Russian army invaded Ukraine in February this year, Makei even declared that “the West started the war” and called on the Ukrainian authorities to accept the peace terms proposed by Russia.
