From rice cake soup to bulgogi… Convenience store lunch boxes packed with ‘New Year’

Endemic holiday convenience food is trending

Less burden on the price even if the cost goes up
Convenience store launches products aimed at ‘honmyeongjok’

Convenience food is emerging as a trend during the ‘endemic (endemic of infectious diseases) holiday’. This is because the preference for simple holiday table setting has increased since the spread of Corona 19, and it is possible to set the table relatively cheaply, with forecasts that the average cost of table setting this year will reach about 300,000 won.

According to the distribution industry on the 15th, convenience stores are putting out lunch boxes with well-structured New Year’s holiday foods, and large marts are showing off special exhibitions featuring convenience meals and cooking products.

The convenience store industry is scrambling to release lunch boxes for the Lunar New Year. CU’s Beef Bulgogi Tteokguk Hansang lunch box, GS25’s Osaek Hanjeongsik lunch box, and Emart 24’s New Year’s Day banquet lunch box. Although it targets single-person households, ‘honmyeongjok’, who spend the holidays alone, convenience stores are also putting their efforts into the related market as more consumers visit because of the advantage that anyone can create a holiday atmosphere without the burden of setting a table.

Supermarkets are holding events related to convenience meals and ready-to-cook food tailored to the Lunar New Year. E-Mart sells Peacock convenience food at a discount, and Homeplus also introduces products that can be simply prepared for ancestral rites through special exhibitions.

A preference for convenience is also evident in the sale of Korean beef, a representative holiday gift. Hyundai Department Store analyzed sales of Korean beef gift sets from the 2nd to the 14th and found that sales of grilled sets that only need to be grilled increased by 26.7% compared to last year’s Lunar New Year.
