The agency said in a statement that it would send 50 border guards and other personnel, as well as equipment, including patrol cars, to strengthen control of Finland’s border.

Reinforcements are due to arrive in Finland next week.

Finland said on Wednesday it would close all but the northernmost border crossings with Russia in response to an influx of illegal migrants.

Helsinki said Moscow was to blame. Meanwhile, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo accused Russian officials of systematic and organized actions aimed at facilitating migrant entry procedures.

Frontex Executive Director Hans Leijtens said in a statement, which did not name Russia, that the agency was increasing support for Finland, which is facing hybrid challenges.

“This cooperation shows that Europe is united in solving complex border issues and offers support with real actions,” added H. Leijtens.

Currently, Finland, which has 1.3 thousand km long border with Russia, 10 Frontex officers work at the border.

Finland’s relations with its eastern neighbor have become strained since February 2022, when Moscow invaded Ukraine. Helsinki has since abandoned decades of military non-alignment and joined NATO in April.
