Frozen Alligators at The Swamp Park: A Unique Adaptation to Freezing Temperatures

As freezing temperatures frosted over the East Coast this weekend, alligators were seen floating in frozen waters at The Swamp Park Alligator Sanctuary located in North Carolina.

Park manager George Howard took to Facebook to share that the gators were living in 17-degree temperatures.

“Their pond that they live in has frozen,” he said in the video, referring to the gators.

The alligators were still able to stick their nose up out of the ice so they could breathe even while they were frozen in place.

The 65-acre alligator sanctuary made headlines in 2018 when it became one of the first sites in the world to document that alligators had found a way to adapt to sudden freezes.

The alligators can stay frozen in place for up to two days at a time.
