Daniel Ricciardo is frustrated by the “poor” Formula 1 rules that left him one lap behind when the Sao Paulo Grand Prix resumed after a red flag period. Alex Albon and Nico Hulkenberg collided in the 200m to the first corner, and the Williams driver also collided with Kevin Magnussen in the other Haas.

Magnussen and Albon quickly left the field, but a tire that came off the rear of the Williams put Ricciardo’s race in jeopardy from the start. The loose chunk of rubber was thrown into the air by Hulkenberg and landed on the rear wing of Ricciardo’s AT04. “There was a pretty big crash right in front of me and there was a lot of debris falling. I felt like I was getting through it, but then I saw the tire come off the rim and fly through the air like a Frisbee. ” Ricardo recalled. “I remember ducking my head as it was getting closer and closer. But I didn’t feel it hit me so I was happy, but when I checked my mirrors the rear wing was way off and the tire hit the wing. “It was obviously frustrating. Looking back on it now, I’m glad it didn’t hit me.”AlphaTauri called Ricciardo into the garage to retire, but after that The red flag gave the team time to repair the rear wing in the garage. As the car was removed from the pit lane to the garage, Ricciardo was counted a lap down and was forced to restart the race from the pit lane alongside Oscar Piastri. “His excitement to race again is completely gone,” Ricciardo lamented. “The green flag racing lap wasn’t completed. It’s really frustrating because I don’t know how to start the race and go down a lap. “The rules are a bit poor. If 15 cars were like they were today… If something like that happened, would they pit 15 cars one lap late and put five cars on the grid? Or would they put two cars on the grid because three cars had already retired? I don’t think they will, so I think they should have common sense and be a little more forgiving. It’s frustrating that they ruined our day from the start.”Ricciardo’s frustration was reflected in Sunday’s Interlagos Justified by the pace shown by Ricciardo and AlphaTauri teammate Hiroki Tsunoda at the circuit. Ricciardo struggled at the back, one lap behind, but Yuki Tsunoda put in a much improved AlphaTauri performance to finish 9th. “What was more frustrating was that we were really fast,” he added. “I couldn’t always show it because I was behind Yuki and trying to get behind Yuki and help him get points, but I felt that the pace I showed in clean air was very strong.” “I’m going to leave tonight feeling a little grateful that I came out unscathed, but I wish I could have raced and it hurts a little bit.”
