“Fuel shortages will improve slightly in the future” 2024-03-13 11:05:30

Cuba’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy, has provided an update on the country’s energy situation in a recent interview.

Amid growing concern over fuel shortages and frequent blackouts, the minister updated the Cuban TV.

Levy specified that the Guiteras plant has been removed for maintenance, a decision that, although it has exacerbated short-term blackouts, is necessary to guarantee long-term stability.

“If we did not make Guiteras, if we did not repair Guiteras, we have a high risk that in the summer with more demand, with more consumption, Guiteras would leave us and we had to make the decision, we are going to release Guiteras for 17 days that must come in and until now “The program is going well,” he said.

The Cuban leader announced that the situation will improve slightly in the future, but not like last year.

“The fuel deficit situation continues. Although the future will be slightly better, fuels will not be as stable as the previous year, when we consumed 2,000 tons of diesel for electricity generation and 4,000 tons of fuel every day for fuel generation with the nonsense,” he said.

FUEL, BLACKOUTS IN CUBA

In addition, the head of MINEM made reference to the fact that other units are undergoing maintenance, preparing for the summer. These units consume Cuban fuel, including gas and crude oil.

However, Cuban citizens continue to face difficulties. The comments on the institutional page of the Electrical Union of Cuba reflect the frustration and desperation of the population.

Residents of Esmeralda, in Camagüey, for example, have been experiencing blackouts of up to 20 hours a day for the last four days. “The people of the province do not answer and they do not care about the situation of this municipality nor do they care that the population may lose their food,” wrote user Osmel López Rodríguez.

Others asked to be provided with the information they really want to hear: Humberto Torres Hung expressed: “the information about when fuel will be available will be given at some point.”

Along the same lines, Rafael Milanés González stated: “I don’t see anyone standing up and showing their face as they should, to say ‘people of Cuba, this is the solution.’ Day after day and you get tired, it’s not easy…”

The complex energy situation in Cuba generates uncertainty and frustration among the population. The Minister of Energy and Mines has recognized the difficulties and has outlined some measures to improve the situation, but there is still no clear date for the normalization of electricity supply.
