Fujifilm held its X Summit today in Stockholm, where it announced the GFX100 II, the update to its flagship medium format mirrorless camera, along with three new GF lenses and new film simulation. Rumors around this camera have been circulating for some time, and most of them seem to be confirmed. After four years, an update to the original GFX100 was overdue, and the new model delivers on many fronts. Fujifilm says this version is all about speed: the new changes will make the GFX system more adept at action photography and high-speed photography.

The new “GFX 102MP CMOS II HS” sensor doubles the reading speed compared to the previous 102 MP sensor of the GFX100S. Combined with the new X-Processor 5, it allows continuous shooting at 8 frames per second. The X-Processor 5 features AI subject detection autofocus, capable of detecting faces, animals, vehicles, etc. This means that it is possible to select a specific category of object and the camera will automatically detect it and keep it in focus. Other improvements include reduced frame delay, reduced viewfinder blackout, and a 5.3fps burst mode without blackout.

New Image Stabilization (IBIS) leverages the faster sensor, detecting motion blur (in addition to gyroscopic data) to provide 8 levels of stabilization. IBIS is also used for the “Pixel Shift Multi-Shot” mode, which shifts the sensor by a distance less than the pixel to create a 400 MP image with a single click. The GFX100 II features Fujifilm’s best viewfinder ever, with 9.44 million dots, up to 1x magnification, better optics and a 120fps refresh rate.

When it comes to video, the GFX100 II can shoot 8K/30P or 4K/60P 4:2:2 10-bit and ProRes video.ProRes videowith support for F-Log2 14+ dynamic range and multiple cinema formats such as Premista and 35mm anamorphic, making it ideal for use with cinema lenses. It can also record directly to an SSD or to the Frame.io cloud service via Ethernet cable.

Design-wise, Fujifilm has made some ergonomic improvements, like adding three function buttons on the grip and tilting the top panel for easier reading. The GFX100 II is also compatible with accessories such as a vertical battery grip, tilt adapterViewfinder tilt adapterwhich allows you to photograph from different angles and acooling fanfor continuous video shooting.

Alongside this new camera, Fujifilm also launched three new GF lenses and a new film simulation called Reala Ace which emphasizes fine grain tonality and smoother gradients. The Capture One app is now available for mobile and iPad, and supports tether shooting and RAW image editing in both wired and wireless modes.

The new GFX100 II will be available at the end of September for $7,499, which is $2,500 less than the launch price of its predecessor, making it a strong competitor to the Hasselblad X2D 100C.
