“G-7 Summit in Hiroshima: Export of Russian Diamonds to be Restricted”

2023-05-18 10:41:15

The group of seven leading democratic industrial nations (G-7) wants to restrict the export of rough diamonds from Russia, which is worth billions. A corresponding declaration is to be decided at the current summit in Hiroshima, Japan, as several dpa diplomats said today. For the time being, however, no agreement will be reached on specific restrictions, according to Archyde.com.

According to a media report, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy might also travel to the G-7 summit meeting. A meeting with the heads of state and government of the seven democratic economic powers depends on the military situation, the Japanese news agency quoted Kyodo Ihor Zhovkwa, the vice chief responsible for foreign policy in the presidential office.

Zelenskyi will “carefully monitor the situation on the battlefield and then make a final decision,” Zhovkva Kyodo said in Kiev the day before. During a visit to Ukraine, Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida invited Zelensky to take part in the summit online. Japan currently holds the G-7 presidency. The President of Ukraine attaches great importance to the meeting, Kyodo reported. A spokesman for the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hiroshima might not confirm a possible personal visit by Zelensky.
