Professional cyclist Felix Gall narrowly missed his first professional victory on the difficult opening stage of the Tour of the Alps in second place. The 25-year-old from East Tyrol was just two seconds behind British Ineos professional Tao Geoghegan Hart on Monday after 127.5 km from Rattenberg to the top of the mountain in Alpbach. Strong climbers Hugh Carthy (GBR/EF) and Ivan Sosa (COL/Movistar) were two more seconds behind Gall.

“This is my first podium in a professional race, a win would have been even cooler, but I’m very satisfied,” Gall said happily. The stage was short and atypical. “A quiet start, a very strenuous finale. The action was concentrated on the last climb. I’m very happy that I was able to ride there. Now I know that I’m there and it can almost start,” said the AG2R drivers who recently performed strongly at the Tour of the Basque Country.

In the overall standings, the ex-junior world champion, who was also second there, is six seconds behind the next section from Reith im Alpbachtal to Ritten in South Tyrol due to credits to the former Giro winner Geoghegan Hart. On the other hand, Hermann Pernsteiner (Bahrain) and Patrick Konrad (Bora) lost more than two minutes outside the top 20 on the first day.
