This is a photo of an alien termite taken at a residential house in Gangnam, Seoul on the 17th.
The Ministry of Environment conducted an on-site investigation to confirm that the termites in the photo were dry tree termites, an alien species, and are conducting emergency control and investigating the inflow route.
<환경부 관계자> “30 objects captured by the complainant and 2 objects we found, we could not confirm any live objects. There is no trace of being introduced from the outside.”
The dried tree termites confirmed this time are pests that have caused great damage to wooden buildings overseas, so there are concerns about damage in Korea as well.
Unlike native termites that gnaw on wet trees, foreign termites eat all dry trees.
Experts note that termites have wings.
There is a possibility that a large number of individuals will inhabit and reproduce.

As climate warming accelerates, concerns are also raised that urban centers with warm indoor spaces even in winter are a good environment for the habitat of creatures such as foreign termites.
The Ministry of Environment requested that if foreign termites are found, they should be immediately reported to the National Institute of Ecology Foreign Species Report Center.
