In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian war, Gaza has become the most dangerous place in the world for children, UNICEF said in a press release.
The press release stated that 5300 Palestinian children were killed in the last 46 days. According to this, about 115 children are killed every day. Forty percent of those killed in Gaza are children. Therefore, Gaza has become the most dangerous place in the world for children. The UNICEF president also stated that they had received reports that at least 1,200 children were trapped under the collapsed buildings.
More children have been killed in the past forty-six days than in all of the conflict in the Gaza Strip. In the seventeen years from 2005 to 2022, approximately 1653 children were killed. 35 children from Israel have been killed since October 7 till last day. More than 30 children still remain hostages. Nearly four and a half million children in the West Bank are in need of humanitarian assistance. Here alone, 56 Palestinian children have been killed in the last six weeks. According to UNICEF, approximately 1.3 million people are displaced in the Gaza Strip, half of whom are children.
Recalling that there are no safe spaces in the Gaza Strip, UNICEF called for the creation of safe havens to prevent more civilians from being killed. In a statement, UNICEF requested that the children’s safety be ensured and international humanitarian law be respected. UNICEF called on both sides in the conflict to declare an urgent ceasefire and to make efforts for a sustainable peace. UNICEF also urged the members of the Security Council to do all they can to end the current tragedy facing children.
