This Thursday morning, Geert Molenberghs was the guest of HLN Live. He returned to the epidemiological situation in Flemish schools.
“Children are the engine of the pandemic. It does not make them sick themselves, but it is a problem for society. We must try to stop this engine”, launches the biostatistician.
Currently, the positivity rate among pupils in Flemish primary education has never been higher (24.6%). “The incidence – the number of cases of contamination per 100,000 pupils – in primary education in Flanders is over 4,500. This is an unprecedented number and continues to increase”, continues Geert Molenberghs.
Before continuing the analysis: “The motor effect means that the virus is passed on to other generations. From there it spreads like waves in the rest of society. Even though children usually do not get seriously ill. , they spread the virus to the rest of society and thus indirectly contribute to higher numbers in hospitals “.
Because in hospitals, the situation could become critical. “We have seen a strong increase in recent days in intensive care units (Editor’s note: 800 occupied beds), stronger than last week. If it continues like this, we cannot exclude the possibility of going to 900 or even 1000 beds occupied. With that, we would exceed the spring peak of 2021 “, he warns.
“What must absolutely be avoided at this stage is that we are now reaching a plateau. The rise (editor’s note: of the epidemic curve) must stop, then there must be a fall as fast and also brutal as possible. The sooner this happens, the better it will be for all of us, “concludes biostatistician Geert Molenberghs.
