Gender Inequality and Brain Structure: New Study Reveals Shocking Results in 29 Countries

The study, published on May 8, 2023 and conducted in 29 different countries, found that “gender inequality is associated with differences in the brains of men and women.”

Over 7,800 MRI scans performed

Researchers conducted a new study which reveals that the sexist and sexual discrimination, lack of access to education and wage inequalities can alter the brain structure of women. It was found that “gender inequality is associated with differences between male and female brains”. The results of this research were published May 8, 2023 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It was carried out in 29 different countries with more than 7,800 MRIs. The researchers explain that “women’s unequal exposure to harsher conditions than men in countries with gender inequalities may be reflected in differences in brain structure”reports the magazine Elle. Education, living environment, opportunities, stress, negative emotions and lack of intellectual opportunities could be the cause of these differences in brain development.

A surprising discovery

To arrive at this result, the researchers examined the profiles of 4,078 women and 3,798 men aged 18 to 40. Their discovery was surprising. Indeed, the gender inequalities seem to have an impact on “cortical thickness”. The cerebral cortex, which plays an essential role in the basic functions of the nervous system (motricity, sensitivity, sensory). The same is true for higher functions such as language and memory, which become thinner in the event of strong inequalities. Nicolas Crossley, the main author of thestudysaid that these results suggest “a potential neural link between gender inequality and increased risks of mental health problems and lower academic performance, highlighting the potentially dangerous effect of gender inequality on women’s brains”.
