Large-format posters have been hanging in Berlin for a few weeks. It reads “Generation Sex”. Advertisement for a new dating portal? A swingers club on the outskirts?

A closer look reveals four black and white photos of older men.

Obviously an open-air concert is advertised. It will take place this Friday (July 7th) exclusively in Germany in the Zitadelle Spandau. The “Slogan” is a combination of two band names that came about around 1976.

Pictured above left is Billy Idol. As the eternal “rebel yell”, he twists his lip at an angle, just like before. At the end of November 2023, Idol can celebrate his 68th birthday.

His band from the early days is called Generation X. In the early years of punk, the singer was able to achieve some respectable successes with hits like “Wild Youth” or “One-Hundred Punk” (an ode to the “One Hundred Club”). So the “generation” past is a part of this supergroup.

The “sex” element, in turn, comes from the Sex Pistols, who are represented in the new formation by guitarist Steve Jones (67) and drummer Paul Cook (also 67). “Gen X” colleague Tony James completes the merry quartet.

This leather jacket project has existed since 2018, when Generation Sex met for the first time at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles. A live joke turned into a tour project.

In a recent telephone interview with the “Berliner Zeitung”, Billy Idol explains the fusion of the warhorses of UK punk. “We play with the classic signature sound that Jonesy and Cookie have. The Pistols sound that these two guys shaped. This sound meant a lot to me back in the mid-70s.”

“Normally” he wouldn’t sing Sex Pistols songs, according to Idol. “Because these are just Johnny Rotten songs. But Jonesy and Cookie really wanted to play it.”

So fans can expect a Sex Pistols revue of sorts, garnished with solo classics like “Dancing With Myself” and maybe “White Wedding” or “No One Is Innocent” from Billy Idol’s spiky hair star phase in the 1980s.

Nicht nur Text von „White Wedding“ mag heute ein wenig altbacken klingen. Dort heißt es im Rocker-Macker-Style: „Hey little sister, what have you done? Hey little sister, who’s the only one? Hey little sister, who’s your Superman? Hey little sister, who’s the one you want?”

Sung by a soon to be 70-year-old, you have to book it as an old man’s joke.

A look back at “then” when punk was still wild and rebellious over four decades ago.

NME reports over 25,000 ‘old school fans’ attended the Crystal Palace Park Festival in London earlier this week, where Generation Sex, alongside Blondie and headliner Iggy Pop, got the party going. The finding is mild: “Punk still has its place in 2023”.

Let’s hope that Billy Idol and his friends don’t take themselves too seriously on Friday’s solo trip to Spandau.
