The possibilities of the new AI functions in Adobe’s Photoshop for creating new content and especially backgrounds seem to heat up many minds. At least that is what the arguments of the past few days on various social networks such as Twitter show, some of which have been very emotional discussions about the pros and cons of specific application scenarios for so-called generative fill.

The AI, which Adobe calls Firefly, creates desired elements after entering text. Generative Fill automatically configures perspective, lighting, and style of images. In the current context, this is mainly used to invent previously non-existent backgrounds for smaller images or image sections. This feature is also known as outpainting and is available been in Dall-E from OpenAI for a long time available.

AI alienates artistic intention and real backgrounds

Thanks to Photoshop, this is now used to expand the covers of famous music albums, such as Nirvanas Nevermind or Abbey Road der Beatles or for well-known and popular internet memes. But that also leads to criticism. That’s what it says about the extended album covers: “Congratulations on a wonderful thread that perfectly illustrates that AI doesn’t understand intention at all.”

The artistic intention and choice of image sections with extended backgrounds of well-known paintings are particularly discussed like Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa or van Gogh’s Starry Night. Some of the images enhanced by the AI have millions of views with thousands of comments.

Many of the comments primarily criticize the question posed by the creator of the AI images, Kody Young: “Have you ever wondered what the rest of the Mona Lisa looks like?” Because this remainder does not exist, but the picture is complete. An extension simply destroys the image composition and thus the artistic intention and staging of the motif, according to the tenor of numerous comments.

The creator of the AI backgrounds is also accused of disrespect and a lack of understanding of art. The starry night probably shows the view from the van Gogh window during his stay in a mental hospital. It is very likely that van Gogh never saw an alleged further background. In the case of the Abbey Road cover, it is also a real street in Londonso the background generated by Photoshop is a fake hallucinated by AI.
