Among the Calogeros, there is Joseph known as “Pepe”, the father, a demonstrative and colorful character. There is also Umberto, the son, who will be in the kitchen at Marinelli Pizza on December 24. The Holy Spirit ? It’s in the recipe for Calogero’s real Italian pizza!

For around twenty years, the people of Mouscron have been cooking and distributing free pizzas to the beneficiaries of the Resto du Cœur de Mouscron. “Christmas Eve is a special day for our family. It’s one of the most important times of the year,” says Umberto.

The pizza maker will get up early to make his dough, which will be used to make 120 pizzas which will then be distributed to poor people on Sunday noon. “This operation always leaves us with a mixed feeling. Personally, I am happy to be able to give a smile to people who have nothing to hope for or expect from the holidays. But I see people coming back every year. There are always just as many of them and nothing is improving for them. It saddens me to see that we cannot get them out of precariousness.”

When the holidays approach, the Resto du Cœur de Mouscron distributes 120 coupons giving everyone the right to a pizza. A gesture which is not insignificant. “It is our duty to be generous, to think of people in need, even if it takes time and energy in an already busy daily life.”

On December 24, “Pepe” and Umberto traditionally ring the general mobilization. A good part of the family helps to run the store. In reality, the Calogeros distribute much more than a meal. They are offering 120 pizzas with extra generosity and humanity! “We want to please. Christmas Eve is all that matters,” continues the pizza maker.

The beneficiaries of the day have two possible choices: Margarita or Ham “to avoid the headache”. For the rest, nothing changes! “We work with the same products to have the same taste. It is not because it is distributed for free that we should neglect our task” The love of well-made pizza comes first!

If he leaves a happy memory in the day of people who prevent themselves from celebrating Christmas, Umberto will be happy. “We all experience struggles at some point in our lives. But as long as we have the chance to celebrate Christmas with family, we can consider ourselves happy. Being in contact with people who deprive themselves of it puts things into perspective. . And that pushes us to show solidarity…”
