ABU DHABI: Lulu Group Chairman MA Yousafali has donated 10 lakh dirhams (Rs 2.25 crore) for the construction of a new building for St. George Orthodox Cathedral, the oldest church in the UAE.
The check will be handed over at the harvest festival next month. 40% construction of the new building which started in December 2021 has been completed. It is expected that the construction will be completed in May 2024. Vicar Rev. Fr. Eldo M. Paul proposed vote of thanks.
The development will be done in two phases at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore. The construction cost of the new place of worship is 1.5 crore dirhams. There are 6000 members in 1800 families under the cathedral. Once the construction is completed, 2000 people can worship at a time. The congregation, which started as a congregation in 1968, was granted land to build a mosque in Khalidiya by UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
The first prayer was held on December 1, 1971 in the temple where he laid the stone himself. Later in 1983, the church was transferred to Mushrif. The place of worship where prayers were offered here for 39 years is being built a new one due to age.
