Genesis Revolutionizes Car Access with Face Recognition and Fingerprint Technology

Genesis makes a name for itself. Admittedly, the registration figures for Koreans in this country are still bobbing in the lower four-digit range. But no importer or manufacturer has expanded the model range as quickly as Hyundai’s noble subsidiary since its German debut two years ago. These include three electric models that already feature the latest technology. Further improvements are now being introduced for the current model year, including, as a world premiere, opening and starting via face recognition and fingerprint.

With the biometric system known as “Face Connect”, driving without a key is actually becoming a reality, as it does not require this or any other form of “legitimation” such as a credit card, bracelet or smartphone. And best of all, it actually works as easily as it reads: touch the door handle, look at the B-pillar, get in, place your finger on the sensor scanner and off you go. At the same time, the personal settings for multimedia, seats and exterior mirrors are called up. Conversely, a handle and a look is enough to lock the car again.

The key is only required for the first access. But once your face and fingerprint are stored in your profile, you can stay at home (forever). This not only creates more security against the notorious tapping of key data by signal amplifiers. It also allows the creation of additional user profiles and access for family and friends.

Setting it up is just as easy as the biometric scan on the smartphone. After selecting the appropriate menu on the screen in the car, the fingerprint is scanned by tapping the sensor several times. For the face scan you have to get out and look into the infrared camera with LED ring in the door frame. When the ring lights up green, the scanning process is complete. This is a 3D scan that cannot be distorted by a photo. The encrypted biometric data also remain in the vehicle and are not passed on to a cloud.

In addition, Genesis offers further improvements for the current model year of its Stromer. This includes, for example, intelligent route planning, which automatically suggests and calculates charging stops on a programmed route, including the number and availability of charging points, prices, opening times and recommended charging times. The “Plug & Charge” function, i.e. communication and billing between the charging station and the vehicle without an app or charging card, is now available for the GV60 and for the electrified models GV70 and G80 from the end of the year. In addition to the Ionity fast charging stations, for which every Genesis customer receives a free five-year subscription at a reduced rate when they make a new purchase, this should also be possible with the Shell Recharge fast charging stations in the future.
