The Davie Police Department has officially closed its investigation into a June 21 altercation involving New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith, citing a lack of evidence and conflicting witness accounts. No charges will be filed against Smith or his former manager, who accused the quarterback of assault following a dispute at his Florida home.
Police Case Status and Evidentiary Challenges
The investigation, which gained public attention after viral social media posts, reached an impasse on July 14, 2026. According to USA Today, the Davie Police Department declared the case inactive because they could not identify a primary aggressor. The report cited the inability to review surveillance footage, conflicting stories, and lack of independent witnesses
as the primary reasons for halting the inquiry.
Authorities noted that both Smith and his accuser, a woman identified as his former manager and son’s caretaker, failed to provide the necessary sworn statements to move the case forward. Despite multiple scheduling attempts by investigators on June 24 and July 9, the woman did not appear, and Smith’s legal counsel declined to provide a statement on his behalf.

The incident at Smith’s residence involved two vastly different narratives regarding missing property and physical violence. As TMZ Sports reported, Smith told police he was in the shower when he heard a disturbance. He claimed the woman, who had been tasked with bringing his son to his mother, had entered his home without permission. Smith alleged that when he confronted her, she punched and scratched his face, leading him to grab her and escort her from the property.
The woman’s account, detailed in police documents, painted a different picture. She claimed Smith threatened to report her for kidnapping if she did not bring the child directly to his home rather than the gate. Once there, she alleged that Smith followed her to her vehicle, seized her laptop and $800, and shoved her to the ground. She stated she then entered his office to take designer watches as collateral
to secure the return of her own items.
The $20 Million Jewelry Dispute
A central point of contention in the police report involved the value of the items taken during the struggle. Smith told investigators that the woman had seized approximately $20 million worth of designer watches and jewelry from his office.
While the physical evidence was limited, officers did observe injuries on both parties. According to The Athletic, the responding officer noted Smith had two scratches on his face and a knot on the back of his head. The woman showed a cut on the webbing of her right hand and a bruise on her left arm, which police noted appeared to be consistent with being grabbed.
Surveillance Footage and NFL Implications
Despite the high-stakes allegations, the available video evidence proved inconclusive. Smith told officers he did not know how to operate the home’s primary security system to retrieve additional footage.
With the criminal investigation now inactive, Smith faces no immediate legal consequences.
