ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Some Georgia State University students said they’re concerned after random gunfire hit windows at the University Commons dorm.
Ira Livnat, with the university’s student government association, said it happened in a community room where students were studying.
“It is terrifying. But I think it’s something we’ve come to expect,” Livnat said. “One of the scariest things is there was, obviously, shock, but some students just kind of reacted like what do you expect? This is Georgia State.”
University President M. Brian Blake said in a letter to families, that no students were hurt and the shots appeared to have come from the nearby highway.
But Livnat said that letter isn’t enough.
“The school is basically saying, ‘This is not something that happened on campus or a student,’” Livnat said.
Livnat acknowledges that the university doesn’t have jurisdiction over certain areas around campus buildings in downtown Atlanta.
Livnat said the student body wants to see school officials make some safety changes, such as bulletproof windows in, at least, the student housing.
“It’s not their fault this happened, but it is their responsibility,” he said.
In his letter, Blake said they have recently funded millions of dollars in safety improvements and are working with the city.
Atlanta News First reached out to the university about the students’ concerns but have not heard back.
