German Chancellor Olaf Scholz put the incident into perspective, saying the situation was not dramatic.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz tried to put into perspective on Friday a breach in his security, which saw a person approach him and hug him this week on an airport runway, an incident deemed unacceptable by his Minister for the Interior.

“That people say hello to me and greet me, it’s not something that impresses me, it’s completely normal and I did not feel this situation as dramatic”, commented Olaf Scholz during a press conference during a visit to Tallin in Estonia. “The police are doing a good job, I feel safe,” he tried to reassure.

“Unacceptable”

His own Home Secretary, Nancy Faeser, was less diplomatic about the work of the police and the chancellor’s close protection team. “Such an incident should not happen,” she told reporters on Friday during a trip.

“The people concerned will now examine very precisely what happened, what mistakes were made, so that it does not happen again in the future,” she added.

Not seen by the police

The facts date back to Wednesday evening on a runway at Frankfurt airport. The chancellor was returning from an event organized at the European Central Bank and had just entered the tarmac with his government convoy. The police did not see that a man had followed the convoy without authorization and that he too had entered this area which was forbidden to him.

When the chancellor got out of his car, the man in his fifties approached him, shook his hand and hugged him. He was then arrested by security and the prosecution opened an investigation. According to the magazine “Der Spiegel”, the intruder seems to have been under the influence of narcotics.
