German Foreign Minister Cancels Pacific Tour due to Government Plane Technical Problems

German Foreign Minister Analina Baerbock announced today, Tuesday, that she had to cancel her week-long tour to the Indian and Pacific Ocean region due to technical problems with the government plane she was traveling on. Birbuck was scheduled to travel to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

“We tried everything: unfortunately, it was not logistically possible to continue my flight to the Indo-Pacific region without the damaged plane. It is very upsetting,” Birbock wrote on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter).

A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said on the “X” platform that yesterday, Monday, the plane tried to take off for the flight from Abu Dhabi twice, but was forced to return again for safety reasons due to a technical malfunction in the parts that control the position of the wings.

Early Tuesday morning, shortly after taking off from Abu Dhabi, the Birbuck plane had to return to the UAE for the second time as its mechanical problems continued.

The German minister was stranded at Abu Dhabi airport early Monday morning on her way to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. A technical problem forced the government plane to return to the Emirates, where it had previously stopped to refuel, shortly after takeoff.

Last year, Burbock had to cancel a trip to meet her British counterpart, James Cleverly, due to bad weather.

And in 2018, former Chancellor Angela Merkel was forced to miss the opening of the G20 summit in Argentina due to a “serious malfunction” that forced her government plane to make an emergency landing.
